Who must complete CPD

Who must meet the CPD Registration Standard?

All doctors must meet the CPD registration Standard, which includes joining an AMC Accredited CPD Home who will support you to complete your CPD.

You can read more about the standard, CPD Homes, and which practitioners are exempt from completing CPD here.

What are the CPD requirements for part-time doctors?

There is no reduced or pro-rata requirement for part-time or locum GPs. All AHPRA-registered doctors are required to complete the mandatory 50 hours of CPD per calendar year, regardless of how many hours worked.

You can read more about the standard, CPD Homes, and which practitioners are exempt from completing CPD here.

Are some doctors exempt from CPD requirements?

There are a few doctor groups who are exempt from meeting CPD requirements. These groups are listed below:

  • Medical students.
  • Doctors with non-practising registration.
  • Doctors with short-term limited registration.
  • Interns in accredited intern training programs and PGY2doctors who are participating in a structured program that leads to a certificate of completion.
  • Doctors granted CPD exemptions by CPD homes (e.g. due to illness, parental leave etc.).

Read the Medical Board of Australia’s information about exemptions here.

How does extended leave affect my CPD requirements?

If you need to take extended leave from practice, impacting your ability to complete CPD activities, you should contact your CPD Home to discuss your options for a variation or exemption

SkinPro CPD subscribers can read the Variations and Exemptions Policy and apply for a Variation or Exemption here.

Understanding the CPD requirements

What CPD requirements do I need to meet?

There are overarching requirements you will need to meet each calendar year to be compliant with the CPD registration standard.

The requirements outlined below must all be completed within at least 50 hours, each calendar year:

  • Develop a Professional Development Plan (PDP), including a self evaluation at the end of the year.
  • Complete a minimum of 50 hours of CPD activities each year that are relevant to your scope of practice. These hours are spread across three activity types listed below:
    • 12.5 hours of Educational Activities – your choice of traditional learning activities.
    • 25 hours of Reviewing Performance and Measuring Outcomes combined (minimum 5 hours each) – decide the best mix for your scope of practice.
    • 12.5 hours free choice of activities – you allocate these CPD hours as you prefer.
  • Complete a CPD activity for each program-level requirement:
    • Culturally safe practice
    • Addressing health inequities
    • Professionalism
    • Ethical practice
  • Complete the High- Level Requirement. For General Practitioners this is refreshing your CPR.

What is a PDP?

A Professional Development Plan (PDP) is a mandatory component of the CPD registration standard. It is a tool to help you focus your thoughts and set your CPD goals for the coming year. Your PDP is unique to you and will be based on your experience, area of specialty and planned CPD activities for the coming year. Your PDP should not be long or complicated, rather a useful document to refer to during the CPD year.

Read more about PDPs here on the MBA website.

SkinPro CPD subscribers can access more information about PDPs here

What types of activities are considered 'Measuring Outcomes'?

Measuring Outcomes activities are those that examine data and information about your clinical work. They allow you to measure and compare your patients’ outcomes against best practice and current research evidence, to maintain the quality of your work. Examples include practice audits, quality improvement projects and analysing reports.

SkinPro CPD subscribers can access further suggestions for Measuring Outcomes activities here.

What types of activities are considered 'Reviewing Performance'

Reviewing Performance activities are those in which you reflect and analyse feedback on your work. They also assist you in identifying opportunities for development. Examples include undertaking patient surveys and feedback processes, participating in peer review meetings and reviewing your own learning after completing an educational activity.

Preparing and then reviewing your own Professional Development Plan (PDP) are both Reviewing Performance activities for which you can claim CPD hours.

SkinPro CPD subscribers can access further suggestions for Reviewing Performance activities here.

What is a Program-level Requirement?

All registered medical practitioners will need to complete core competency CPD activities, Program Level Requirements, supporting practice development and improvement. Time spent on activities meeting these requirements are included in your 50 hours of CPD.

The four requirements are:

  • Culturally safe practice
  • Addressing health inequities
  • Professionalism
  • Ethical practice

Your CPD Home will determine the amount of time you need to spend on each of these activities.

SkinPro CPD subscribers can access suggested resources for meeting these requirements here.

Joining SkinPro CPD

Does SkinPro CPD only accept skin cancer GPs as members?

We offer SkinPro CPD subscription to all current SCCA members who are Australian based medical practitioners. Skin cancer GPs are likely to find that being a SkinPro CPD subscriber suits their scope of practice. All Australian based medical practitioners with an interest in skin cancer medicine are welcome to join as an SCCA member and SkinPro CPD subscriber.

If I join SkinPro CPD can I keep my GP College membership?

Yes, you may remain a member of your GP college and still be a SkinPro CPD subscriber. You should be aware that most of the colleges are including the cost of their CPD program in their membership fees, so you are likely to automatically be considered a member of their CPD Home unless you proactively opt out. Being a member of SCCA and a subscriber to SkinPro CPD offers a great value alternative to most GP college membership fees.

See more information about SCCA and SkinPro CPD fees here.

Will my choice of CPD Home impact my registration with AHPRA as a GP?

No, your choice of CPD Home will not impact your registration with AHPRA as a GP, including vocational registration. Registration as a GP is not dependent on being a member of RACGP or ACRRM.  To maintain your AHPRA registration every doctor, regardless of their specialty, must complete 50 CPD hours each year, and must have a CPD Home.

What does it cost to be a member of SkinPro CPD?

The cost to be a member of SCCA and then to subscribe to SkinPro CPD are as follows:

  • SCCA Full Membership (Open to medical practitioners registered to practise in Australia)
  • SkinPro CPD Subscription (Open only to SCCA members)

See more information here.

How do I join SkinPro CPD?

That’s easy, simply fill out the membership registration form on the SCCA website here and pay your membership and subscription fees. We will be in touch as soon as we have processed your application with details about how to get started with planning, completing, and recording your CPD activities with SkinPro CPD.

I am already an SCCA member, so am I automatically also a SkinPro CPD member?

No. As a member of SCCA, you will not automatically become a SkinPro CPD subscriber. You will need to subscribe to SkinPro CPD.

Can I join SkinPro CPD if I am not an SCCA member?

Unfortunately, not. You must become a member of SCCA to be a SkinPro CPD subscriber. See more information about the benefits of becoming a member of SCCA and subscribing to SkinPro CPD here.

Tracking and Monitoring my CPD

What do I do if I don't have any formal evidence to record?

Your CPD Home may have specific requirements around types of acceptable evidence. SkinPro CPD subscribers can read about providing evidence here. Many activities that can be counted towards your CPD hours don’t come with a handy certificate. For example, reading, viewing, or listening to educational materials and participating in regular meetings. SkinPro CPD subscribers have access to templates to record these activities. Subscribers are also welcome to record activity details directly into the portal, filling out all required fields.

How do I decide which type of CPD hours apply to my activity?

The MBA have listed types of activities that can be applied to CPD, and which of the three categories they align to; Education, Reviewing Performance and Measuring Outcomes. SkinPro CPD subscribers can refer to the Detailed Activity Guide for more specific information relating to doctors practicing skin cancer medicine. SkinPro CPD support staff can help with suggestions for how you might develop evidence for any CPD activities that don’t easily provide confirmation.

How will I know if I am not meeting the CPD standards?

In addition to accessing outstanding CPD information in the subscriber portal, SkinPro CPD subscribers will be provided with communications at appropriate intervals with progress summaries highlighting any outstanding requirements.

Will SkinPro CPD recognise activities that are accredited by another CPD home?

SkinPro CPD will recognise activities provided by other CPD Homes. For other activities, SkinPro CPD will work with you to determine whether the activity is of acceptable quality and if so, what hours per CPD category can be claimed for completing that activity.

About CPD Homes

What is a CPD Home?

A CPD Home is an organisation accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) to provide a CPD program for medical practitioners. These programs are quality-assured, support safe practice and can be tailored to suit individual learning needs.

CPD Homes provide support to help you complete your CPD requirements and keep track of your CPD hours.  They provide and/or coordinate CPD programs that are robust, monitored and evaluated and make sure doctors meet annual CPD requirements.

Who oversees CPD Homes?

The Medical Board of Australia (MBA) details the minimum requirements for CPD for all Australian medical practitioners.  The MBA has appointed the Australian Medical Council (AMC) to accredit CPD Homes and then monitor and audit each CPD Home’s compliance with the accreditation standards on an ongoing basis.

How do I nominate my CPD Home with AHPRA?

AHPRA has advised that doctors will need to declare their CPD home at registration renewal. You can review their advice here.

If you are applying for medical registration in Australia for the first time, you will be required to provide AHPRA with details of your nominated CPD home/s.

You can view details regarding SCCA and SkinPro CPD fees here and review our Fees and Refunds Policy here.

Can I be a member of multiple CPD Homes?

Yes. However, if you have multiple CPD Homes, please make sure you tell your CPD Home as this could impact how your CPD Home monitors your CPD compliance reporting to APHRA.

Can I change my CPD Home?

Yes. You can change your CPD Home at any time by notifying your current CPD Home of your intention to leave.  Each CPD Home may have different requirements regarding notice periods and refund policies, so please contact your CPD Home to discuss ahead of time.

If you are moving to SkinPro CPD, we will support you to change from your existing CPD Home to SkinPro CPD, including helping you to upload evidence of CPD activities already completed for that year.

Subscription to SkinPro CPD is for a calendar year, from January to December but you can join SkinPro CPD at any time.

If you are a current SkinPro CPD subscriber and you choose to leave, we will provide you with a statement of your CPD activities for that year to date and any previous years that you were with SkinPro CPD.

See the Fees and Refunds Policy for more information regarding eligibility for refunds.

Can I only do activities provided by SkinPro CPD?

Absolutely not! You can choose CPD activities by other providers as long as they suit your scope of practice or individual needs as identified in your Professional Development Plan (PDP), and they are a quality provider. SkinPro CPD subscribers can use the Framework for Selecting Quality CPD Activities to assist with activity selection. If you are unsure of the quality of the CPD activity you are choosing, you should seek assistance from the SkinPro CPD team.

SkinPro CPD subscribers can also choose from our list of pre-approved activity providers here.

Will SkinPro CPD help me achieve CPD compliance?

Absolutely yes! SkinPro CPD support staff are available for support via email, phone, and scheduled phone and video calls. Staff will assist you to plan and complete your CPD requirements, ensuring you understand what you need to do to be compliant with the CPD standard. We will monitor your entry of CPD activity details into the SkinPro CPD Portal and send you regular reminders and suggestions for how to stay on track.

For more information about how SkinPro CPD will support you, see the Member Support Policy.

CPD reporting and compliance

Who tracks and reports my CPD compliance?

Your CPD Home is responsible for tracking your progress towards meeting the CPD standards. CPD Homes are also responsible for providing the Medical Board of Australia with compliance reports within 6 months of each CPD year end.

You can read more about CPD Home responsibilities here.

What information is reported to MBA?

CPD Homes are required to provide a list of CPD-compliant and non-compliant practitioners to the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) every year, for the previous CPD year. This will include any practitioners who have been granted a variation or exemption for that CPD year.

If you have not successfully completed your CPD requirements, you will be included in your CPD Home’s list of non-compliant practitioners. The MBA may then contact you to enquire why you have not been compliant.

What happens if I don't have enough CPD hours or have the right breakdown of hours across the categories?

SkinPro CPD will continually monitor and provide you with updates regarding how you are tracking with completion of your CPD requirements. This will include prompts and suggestions for ways that you can easily complete CPD hours to suit your individual circumstances. If you are experiencing difficulties in completing your hours, you may be eligible to apply for variation or exemption. SkinPro CPD support staff will assist you with this.

However, if you have not completed the required CPD hours, SkinPro CPD will not be able to include you in the list of CPD compliant practitioners that must be reported to MBA.

Appeals and disputes

What happens if I don't agree with my CPD record?

Contact your CPD Home immediately if you don’t agree with your CPD Record. SkinPro CPD subscribers should contact the support team directly to seek support to verify and correct any omissions. If you don’t agree with a decision made by SkinPro CPD about the CPD hours that can be claimed for your CPD activities, you can appeal the decision.

SkinPro CPD subscribers can refer to the Appeals Policy and Appeal Application Form here for more details.

Who do I advise if a CPD activity doesn't appear on my record?

The SkinPro CPD support team support subscribers with reflecting their work in their CPD records. All SCCA/SkinPro CPD activities, and external pre-approved activities that you complete will automatically be included in your CPD record for you. Please allow time for external activities to be reflected in your records.

Special Circumstances

What if I become ill, or need extended leave and can't complete all my CPD?

SkinPro CPD understands that circumstances may arise that impact on your ability to fulfil your CPD obligations. This may entitle you to seek a partial or full exemption from completing your CPD requirements. Contact SkinPro CPD support staff as soon as you are aware of your change in circumstances, and we will work with you to identify and implement the most appropriate solution for you.
