Advanced Skin Surgery Workshop

This course is specifically designed for doctors already undertaking simple skin excisions and routine closures in primary practice.

Enjoy comprehensive tuition to improve the skills and clinical knowledge required to appropriately manage the most common lesions encountered in primary practice. This workshop also comprises the compulsory practical component of the SCCA Advanced Clinical Certificate of Skin Cancer Medicine & Surgery.

This course offers interactive learning with hands-on practical sessions. Lectures, online learning, and practical sessions cover the major types of flaps and skin grafts and the appropriate application of these on specific body regions.

The face-to-face workshop features focused practical skills training and surgical case study reviews, with College clinical experts in a small group format.

  • In depth theory and practical coverage of basic and advanced flaps, including Advancement, Tranposition, Rotation and Island advancement flaps

  • Basic and advanced flap suturing techniques
  • Preparing students for decision making in real-world scenarios, including case study analysis, surgical planning, and navigating complications

Entry Requirements

  • Candidates must be registered medical practitioners.
  • Candidates must be graduates of the SCCA Certificate of Skin Cancer Medicine or have completed Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

To competently participate in this workshop, you must be able to answer ‘Yes’ to all the statements below.

If you are unable to answer ‘Yes’ to all statements, it is strongly recommended you do not enrol in this workshop. The program cannot be adjusted to compensate for students who are unable to keep up. No refund of course fees is available to students who lack the prerequisite skills.

  • I have a basic understanding of skin anatomy; concepts of resting skin tension lines; cosmetic units and sub-units.
  • I can demonstrate a sound knowledge of suture materials and instruments.
  • I am able to handle surgical instruments efficiently and tie surgical knots.
  • I regularly administer local anaesthesia.
  • I am able to perform elliptical excisions using layered closure principles incorporating deep dermal sutures.
  • In my current practice I regularly perform excisions on all body regions.
  • I have a sound understanding of wound healing and the management of wound complications.
  • I have a sound knowledge of skin cancer pathology and management, including knowledge of appropriate margins.

What can I expect from the learning experience?

This course online learning and workshop combines lectures, demonstrations and extensive hands-on practical sessions. You’ll work closely with experienced educators and fellow participants in a supportive learning environment, developing both theoretical understanding and surgical precision through interactive, case-based learning.

Am I eligible to register?

Applicants must be registered medical practitioners and graduates of the SCCA Certificate of Skin Cancer Medicine or hold equivalent Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Participants should already be confident performing basic skin surgery, including elliptical excisions and layered closures. This ensures everyone can fully engage with the advanced practical components of the workshop.

If you’re unable to attend your booked workshop, please contact the College as early as possible to discuss alternative dates or future course options. Places are limited, so early notice helps us accommodate changes where possible. Future attendance is not guaranteed and is subject to SCCA approval.
