Professional Development Plan (PDP)

Your Professional Development Plan (PDP) helps you to select relevant and useful CPD activities, with the ultimate goal of improving skills and knowledge you have identified as important. Your plan will include goals for the year, ideas for how you will achieve these goals, and a reflection at the end of the year to assist in planning for the coming year. Make your PDP your first priority, and set yourself on a manageable path to achieving your CPD requirements and learning goals for the year.

Towards the end of the year, your PDP is used to reflect on your goals and help you to prepare for the following CPD year. The Medical Board of Australia (MBA) states your PDP should not take long to complete and does not need to be a complicated document.

The MBA requires every medical practitioner to develop a PDP each year to help you:

  • think about your lifelong learning, knowledge gaps and learning opportunities
  • connect your learning to your practice needs, and
  • match your increasing skills and knowledge to changes in your practice.

Steps to complete your PDP

1. Identify your Professional Development Goals

Start by considering your scope of practice and any topics or techniques relevant to your practice that you would like to learn more about or improve your skills in.

Your PDP is yours alone and is unique to you, so be honest with yourself. Don’t underestimate your skills and knowledge but also don’t overlook the need to improve and enhance your ability.

Focus on general themes (the big picture) for your professional development.

You can express your CPD goals as statements like ‘I want to improve my knowledge about…’ or ‘I’d like to compare my skill in X with my colleagues’ etc.

These will be your individual overarching goals for the CPD year.

Change or remove any of your goals throughout the year if your learning needs, or scope of practice changes. It is expected that a new topic may pique your interest during the year and become an important learning goal. Make sure you capture this and add to next year's PDP if needed.

2. Develop activities supporting your goals

List any activities you have identified to support your goals. You don't need to list individual courses or activities, this is a brainstorming section to come up with ideas for what you could do to achieve this goal.

Note: this is not a mandatory section to complete as are your goals and reflection, rather a notes tool for jotting down ideas to complete your PDP.

3. Update your PDP as required

Change or remove any goals throughout the year if your learning needs or scope of practice changes. Your PDP is a fluid document!

4. Review, reflect and self-evaluate your PDP

As you complete each activity, consider whether you have achieved your goals for the year. Write a reflection for each goal, you may like to include information such as:

  • whether you are still working on your goal (or did you meet your goal?)
  • key learnings you took away from your activities
  • how your work might be influenced or improved by your learning
  • areas for further exploration
  • what you might do next year if continuing with the same learning goal (copy and paste into next year’s PDP!).

Capture the time you have spent on your PDP under the ‘Reviewing Performance’ category (SkinPro CPD will automatically allocate time to your record, but you are welcome to add further time to this if needed).

Getting Started

Below are some examples to help you start writing your PDP:

GOAL (I would like to) ACTIVITIES TO SUPPORT GOAL ACTIVITIES TO SUPPORT GOAL
Develop / refine my knowledge of Dermoscopy or Skin cancer repair techniques Read and comment on the SCCA Skin Cancer Blog at least weekly
Learn about newest skin cancer medicine research / techniques Attend the Australasian Skin Cancer Congress in May
Improve my knowledge of flap repairs on lower legs Ask Dr Smith if I can observe procedures
Review my diagnostic abilities Undertake a skin audit
Improve communication with practice team (or colleagues, or patients) Participate in / organise peer review meetings, or multidisciplinary team meetings
Improve my patient rapport / communication Complete cultural safety course with Australian Indigenous Doctors' Association

SAMPLE REFLECTION

Over the past year, I have gained increased confidence in my skin repair techniques, particularly as I made a conscious effort to focus on these skills in my day-to-day practice. Through this process, I have begun to recognise specific areas where further development would be valuable — especially in relation to [specific flap repair]. I noticed opportunities for improvement based on [insert information, e.g., case outcomes, supervisor feedback, complexity of recent lesions, or challenges encountered during procedures].

This insight has highlighted a clear direction for my ongoing professional growth. I am considering making advanced training in this flap repair technique a central learning goal for next year. To support this, I plan to explore formal courses, workshops, and mentoring opportunities that will enable me to consolidate and extend my surgical skills.
