Vale Professor Richard Scolyer AO

Professor Richard Scolyer AO, celebrated melanoma researcher and former Australian of the Year, has passed away aged 59 following a three-year battle with glioblastoma.

Scolyer was a world-leading melanoma pathologist who authored more than 1000 publications and presented hundreds of times at global conferences. His 35-year working life spanned the development of breakthroughs in immunotherapy for melanoma, reviewing the most difficult melanoma cases from around the world and mentoring the next generation of doctors, pathologists and researchers.

When diagnosed with glioblastoma in May 2023, Scolyer opted for experimental brain cancer treatment based on melanoma science he had helped to develop, including a combination immunotherapy approach. It is hoped that the data collected from this world-first approach will inform the future of brain cancer treatment.

Scolyer penned an open letter to all Australians that was released following his passing last night. In it, he spoke of the importance of continued research and funding to improve cancer outcomes now and into the future.

“To all cancer patients, I encourage you to consider enrolling in research and clinical trials, if on offer. And to government and the wider community, please keep funding science and medical research. This is the most impactful way that you too can make a difference.

Perhaps the greatest lesson to come from these last three years is that cancer does not define us. It may be the current road we are travelling, but it is not our entire journey. A terminal cancer diagnosis does however provide clarity as to what truly matters.

It shines a spotlight on the importance of relationships, on true friendship and on selflessness. Whilst cancer may not define us, our ability to empathise with and have compassion towards others does.”

The open letter can be viewed via the ABC website at this link.

Scolyer served in a variety of roles at Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) for over two decades, and the Institute has launched the Richard Scolyer Pathology Fellowship to support future generations of pathologists. MIA encourages those who wish to leave a tribute to Professor Scolyer to visit this link and share a message.
